Sometimes shaving the stump down below the lawn doesn't cut it — you need the whole thing out, roots and all. That's stump removal: the crew extracts the stump and the main root plate from the ground, leaving genuinely clear soil rather than a buried root system slowly rotting away.
It's more work than grinding and more disruptive to the yard, so it's not the default. But when you actually need clean ground, nothing else will do.
If none of those apply, save yourself the dig and the cost — grinding is the right call for ordinary lawns and garden beds.
Full removal is closer to an excavation than a cutting job. Depending on the size of the stump and the access, the crew will either lever and dig the root plate out by hand or bring in machinery to do it. The stump and roots are hauled away, the hole is backfilled and the area levelled. Expect freshly turned soil where it stood rather than untouched lawn — that's the nature of getting the roots out.
Grinding gets the stump out of sight and is cheap and tidy. Removal gets the roots out of the ground and is what you want when something's going where the tree used to be. Not sure which fits? Tell us your plan for the spot when you call.
Stump removal frequently follows a tree removal on a block that's being cleared for a build or a landscape, and it pairs with mulching or chipping of the rest of the green waste. We can quote the whole lot together.
We coordinate stump removals across the metro, from the inner north around Brunswick through the eastern suburbs and south down the bay to Frankston and Mornington — access permitting, which we check at the quote. See all the areas we serve.

Learn more →Go for full removal when you need the ground genuinely clear: you're building, laying a slab or footing where the stump stood, the roots are lifting paving, a driveway or a path, the roots are getting into drains or pipes, or you want clean, root-free soil for serious planting or landscaping. For an ordinary lawn or garden bed, stump grinding is usually all you need and is cheaper and less disruptive — so it's worth telling us the plan for the spot and we'll recommend the right one.
Yes — extraction is essentially a dig, so you'll have a hole and some soil disturbance where the stump and root plate come out. That's the trade-off for getting the roots gone. We backfill and level as part of the job, but the patch will be freshly turned soil rather than untouched lawn, and a large stump leaves a larger hole. If keeping the yard intact matters more than removing the roots, grinding is the gentler option.
Usually, yes, though access changes the method. Full extraction often needs machinery to lever the root plate out, so a stump jammed against a fence, footing or in a narrow inner-city backyard is more involved than one in an open yard. At the free quote the crew assesses access and tells you honestly whether full removal is practical there or whether grinding is the smarter call for that spot.
